Editorial Policy

This policy explains how I research, write, test, and update Yentice, and it shows you how to report an error.

Who writes the content

I write and review every page on this site. The word finder itself runs inside your browser, so nobody reads what you type.

How I research

Primary sources come first. For rules I go to Wordfeud itself, and for words I use an open dictionary project. The table below lists each source and what I take from it.

Sources behind Yentice
SourceWhat I use it for
Wordfeud help pageScoring rules, tile values, tile counts, the seven-tile bonus, pass and swap rules, and the turn time limit.
Wordfeud dictionary informationDictionary details for readers who want them.
SCOWL, en_US dictionaryThe base of the word list behind the tool.
My own test racksChecks that tool results and scores match the rules.

Facts and opinions

Rules, values, and counts are facts, and each one links back to a source. Strategy tips are different. They reflect my judgment, so I word them as advice instead of rules.

How I test the tool

Before each release I run a fixed set of test racks and compare the output with scores I work out by hand. For example, the rack QI must show QI at 11 points. When I swap the I for a blank, the same word must drop to 10. Every filter gets tested alone and then together with the others.

How I build the word list

The list starts with the en_US spell-checker dictionary, which holds about 79,000 base entries. I expand those into full word forms, keep words of two to 15 letters, and add a checked set of two-letter words. Abbreviations and a few offensive terms come out. Because Wordfeud accepts some of those terms, the list can miss a few real plays. The final list holds 111,193 words.

Updates and reviews

Each page shows a review or update date. If Wordfeud changes a rule or a tile value, I update the affected pages and the date. A change to the tool also triggers a review of the whole site.

Corrections

I want to hear about mistakes. Send the page address and a short description through the contact page. Then I check your claim against its source. If you are right, I fix the page and update the date, and for a major fix I add a short note at the top.

Independence and funding

No company pays me to write about its product, and none has reviewed these pages. The site shows no ads today. Should that change, I will label every ad and keep ads away from the results. The disclaimer has the full disclosure.
